Business Website Development Checklist: SEO, Speed and Leads

A business website should explain what you offer and make the next step easy. Visual design matters, but discoverability, page speed, mobile usability, trust and working enquiry forms are equally important. This checklist helps a business owner prepare a website or a website redesign before development starts.

Clarify what each page needs to achieve

Define audiences and actions

List the main visitor groups, their problems and the action they should take: call, request a quote, book a meeting or read a service page. Keep the navigation short enough for visitors to understand without guessing.

Give important services their own pages

A clear page for web development, applications, hosting or another genuine service lets you explain features, process and frequently asked questions without forcing unrelated terms into the homepage.

Create useful content and search-friendly structure

Write people-first titles and headings

Give every page a descriptive title, one clear primary heading and sections that answer real customer questions. Write concise meta descriptions without repeating the company name unnaturally. Descriptions help set expectations but Google may choose a different snippet.

Use internal links where they help

Link from the homepage to important services and from each service to the most relevant supporting pages. Use descriptive anchor text, not long lists of identical links. Avoid orphan pages that visitors and crawlers cannot reach.

Build for mobile, accessibility and speed

Check phones before launch

Test navigation, form fields, text size, button hit areas and layout at common mobile widths. Content should remain available on mobile and not depend on mouse hover.

Optimise important visual assets

Deliver responsive images in efficient formats, set image dimensions to reduce layout shift and avoid lazy-loading the main visible hero image. Compress the rest while keeping logos clear. Use descriptive alternative text for meaningful images and empty alt text for decoration.

Finish technical SEO and conversion testing

Configure crawlability correctly

Use a preferred HTTPS domain, canonical URLs, XML sitemap and robots.txt. If moving from an older domain, add server-side permanent redirects for corresponding pages. Do not deploy test-only noindex rules to production.

Test the entire enquiry path

Submit a test form, verify the destination receives it, confirm success and failure messages and try using keyboard navigation. Review analytics and Search Console after launch to learn what visitors actually search for.

Frequently asked questions

Does a beautiful website automatically rank on Google?

No. Search visibility also depends on helpful content, technical accessibility, competition, credibility and how Google understands the site. Visual quality is only one component.

Is website hosting related to SEO?

Hosting can affect reliability and page speed. Pick a secure hosting setup, configure HTTPS, and measure real-world performance rather than buying hosting based only on marketing claims.
